Peak District Holiday

We're doing lots of walking in the Peak District, staying on a farm near Biggin, near Hartington. It's a very beautiful place and everyone is very friendly. Yesterday we had lunch at Uncle Geoff's Diner at Over Haddon. There are 4 tables, in what used to be a garage and it's run by an old chap who is deaf. He deals with orders one by one and you have to write down what you want. An experience not to be missed!! The quality is excellent, the prices low, but you might have a long wait.

RCA Summer Exhibition

While in London we popped into the Royal College of Art's summer exhibition. It was in a very large marquee in Kensington Gardens. It was interesting to experience the work of these young radical free-thinkers from a Bic biro turned into a hexagon to a vision of a rather bleak future to a structure made from kids' play tunnels supported by scaffolding. When we tried to leave by the same hole in the tent through which we entered we were stopped by two security people. "You'll have to leave at the other end of the marquee" was their cry. They wouldn't be budged in this and stood firmly in our way. There was no-one trying to enter or leave other than us and the exit led directly into the gardens. It was just a question of a rule that had been made. It made me think that the marquee was there to contain all the free-thinking and not let it out into the "real" world. The poor RCA people and their ideas were the exhibit in a sort of zoo - to be stared at and contained. How did we get into such a state that meaningless petty rules take over and we all comply? How did we end up a nation of form-fillers? When did we give up and let the bureaucrats take over? Why don't we protest loudly at the obvious stupidity of much of what goes on in our nation? It makes me want to start making a fuss - maybe I need to do so when the next really stupid thing crops up.

We went to see Swan Lake in the round at the Royal Albert Hall. We were 3 rows from the front and it was like being in amongst the performers, although I resisted the urge! They get really sweaty. It was more interesting than I anticipated, even though they took 3 hours to tell a really simple story. Afterwards we wandered over to Kensington Gardens and took a look at the Diana Memorial Fountain after a much-needed cup of tea!

Today was Abigail's dedication. Here is a prayer I wrote for the occasion:

Abigail dedication prayer
Father God we thank you for the joy that has been named Abigail. We thank you for health in mind and body. We thank you for giving us someone to love. We thank you for family. Thank you for James and Crystal, recognising that Abigail must have been given first choice when parents were allocated.
We pray for her life as we find your desires for her echoing as hopes and dreams in our hearts.
May she find the wild, extravagant, dangerous God who looks just like Jesus. May her spirit leap and frolic in response to your call. May she dance with you and hold you close. May she laugh and cry with you as you tell her your stories. May she love the unlovely with you and be the instrument by which ugliness is turned into beauty.
May she be passionate in her giving, generous in her loving and complete in her forgiving.
In times of darkness may she glow and when her journey becomes difficult may she find endurance.
When faced with difficult choices may she always choose the path paved with love and sacrifice.
May her journey to becoming a woman be an unfolding of new depths to her personality and wisdom.
Bless her with good friends at every stage of life. Let her find soul-mates who will share her journey.

It was our wedding anniversary on Sunday - 35 years of married bliss! I realised that I would honestly not change a thing about the woman I married, and am very grateful that it's all worked out so well and that we have such a wonderful family. We were too busy enjoying it to take any pictures, but we were taken out for a carvery lunch. It's a shame Charissa couldn't be there but otherwise it was an excellent day.

We're just back from an awesome couple of weeks in the Lake District (just north of Ullswater). Fantastic walks every day and James, Crystal and Abigail joined us for the second week. This is an early morning view of Ullswater when the lake was still.
Abigail, although only 7 weeks old, was no trouble at all and entertained us with her smiles and chuckles.

Such amazing development in size, strength, awareness and cuteness! This was taken on Sunday 13th August - her 1 month birthday. There's still a lot of crying and demanding going on, but moments like this seem to make it all worth it. Abigail was born at 1:30 pm on Thursday 13th July. Crystal had to undergo an emergeny Caesarean and Abigail is in the special care baby unit, but both should be fine. She weighs 6lb 9oz.

Seafront Antics - The Answer!

OK, so it's not that exciting, but as most of you will know, Heather helps run a pre-school playgroup and they were running a theme of "The Sea". She had the idea of collecting seawater, seaweed, cuttlefish, etc. and getting the children (age 2 and a bit to 5) to say what they could see in the bowl.
The problem was she hadn't really thought it through properly and ended up going down to the seafront on the evening before which turned out to be quite a high tide and fairly blustery. Pleasant thoughts of calmly dipping bottles in rock pools turned into braving the waves and the wind. The plastic bottle she took was soon snatched out of her hand and washed out to sea. By some miracle it was washed back onto the beach after a few minutes and she did manage to get a few cc's of water in it, getting herself very wet in the process. I maintain that she'd have got more water if she'd simply wrung out her clothes into a bucket when we got home!
I was of great help of course - standing back and taking pictures whilst trying to persuade Bobby to go for a swim.
Incidentally, one of the children swore that he could see 2 sea-snakes in the water!!!!

Peter, Heather, Rosemarie, George, Hope and Nick met for a meal at the Eight Bells in Jevington. After a delightful meal (well they did forget George's food, but didn't charge for it in the end!) we strolled to the churchyard where we saw this enormous moon.

It was our 34'th Wedding Anniversary last Saturday. We spent the weekend in London, going to see the Mousetrap on Saturday evening and taking a river trip on Sunday. I really enjoyed the play and we were sworn to secrecy at the end, although as it's been going for 50 years I'm surprised everyone doesn't know whodunnit by now! My thoughts are with my brother Michael at this time and I ask you in faithfulness to watch over him. This weekend and the next weekend we celebrate your death and resurrection, an act of love that reveals your concern for all of us. At the moment Father, Michael has hit a bump in the road of life and I ask that you simply remind him of your presence and that Michael can give all of his concerns for the future to you. I ask you Father to walk with him and surround him in your love in the coming weeks and give him strength and peace of mind during this difficult time. It's Alethea's birthday on Thursday 9th Feb. and we had a meal at the Parsonage restaurant on Tuesday as she's out for the day with a friend on Thursday.
